Advanced Phrases for English Conversations

Situation 1. asking for other peoples' opinion

: Would you like to add anything? 

 

Situation 2. you want to interrupt

: Do you mind if i add to that ? 

: Can i jump in here ? 

: Sorry to interrupt but ...

: Sorry, may i interrupt you for just a moment ? 

: If I may interrupt for a minute...

 

Situation3 : you have gone off topic (주제를 벗어났을 때)

: So anyway, getting back to my story...

: As i was saying...

: Where was I ? (Where were we ? )

 

Situation 4 : you think you understand... but you need to double-check.

:  So, what you're saying/asking is....

: So, what you want to know is...

: Do you mean ...

: In other words, what you're saying is ...

: (more formal) I would like to confirm what you said...

: (more formal) Excuse me, can i just confirm that....

 

Situation 5 : agree

: yes, / absolutely

: I completely agree with you.

: I couldn't agree more!

 

Situation 6 : somewhat disagree

: I see what you mean, but...

: I understand your point of view, but...

: I can see where you are coming from, but...

: I agree with you up to a point, however ...

 

Situation 7 : Disagree

: I don't feel the same way. 

: Actually, I don't quite agree / I disagree.

: I'm afraid I don't agree with you on that.

: (more formal) Respectfully, I have to disagree.

: We'll have to agree to disagree then!

 

Situation 8 : change the topic

: That reminds me...

: Speaking about/of ...

  - Speaking about your holiday to Greece, did I tell you that I've got a trip planned later in the year ?

: Oh, by the way, ...

: Oh, while I remember ...

: Before I forget ...

: This has nothing to do with what we are talking about, but....

: I know this is changing the topic, but...

 

Situation 9 : you are talking about a controversial topic. (논란이 많은...ex) politic, social, ...)

: I know not everyone agrees with me. 

: I know this is a contentious issue. 

: it might be an unpopular opinion, but i strongly believe...

: I don't see eye-to-eye with everyone on this matter, but i think it's really important to discuss this. 

: Whilst (while) you may not agree with my views, I'm definitely interested in hearing yours. 

: I'm not trying to ruffle anyone's featheres here...

 

Situation 10 : you want to end a conversation

: Well, I'd best be off ! It's been great chatting.

: Anyway, i'd better get back to it(work).

: I'm so glad I ran into you ! It's been great catching up. I'll see  you soon.
